Google Project Starline

At this point, those of us who cover technology for a living are pretty used to demos and product showcases that promise magic, some revolutionary new breakthrough, some boundary-pushing leap forward that promises to put a dent in the universe. Hyperbole is de rigueur for Silicon Valley tech giants like Google -- even though, sometimes, the breathless tease arguably turns out to, well, be warranted. A good example of this is Google's Project Starline, a new video chat system that was unveiled at the search giant's annual I/O conference this week.

Suffice it to say, the presentation ...

I'm not sure what I was expecting from the midseason finale for The Nevers, HBO's inventive and alluring science fiction drama set in Victorian England. But I certainly didn't foresee being so disoriented that I briefly wondered if HBO Max had started airing an entirely different series by mistake. I won't spoil the finale for you, but let's just say that the revelations in that sixth episode set up a radical new direction for the series. I'm curious to see ...

4 Best Practices for Facilitating Networking in a Hybrid Environment

May 19, 2021

How to make sure technology enhances your meeting’s reach and experience.

Attendees overwhelmingly cite networking opportunities as a key reason to attend events. This remains true in 2021, but the infrastructure to facilitate networking has fundamentally expanded as we move forward from the pandemic and the radical shifts it triggered.

While technology capable of connecting people may once have seemed like a threat to live events, industry pros have realized that it can facilitate networking across a broader swath of participants—and supports organizations’ bottom lines in the process.

“People now know that the hybrid component enhances meetings and brings ...

What Happened To America?

May 19, 2021

I side with those who say we’re experiencing the end-game of unbridled capitalism.  Since the late 19th Century, we’ve seen a dwindling spiral of greed, moral decay, and poor education.  Each re-enforces the other two.

Countries that have free education and healthcare don’t have this plague.

When moral bankruptcy, selfishness, and ignorance dominates a society, the result is a forgone conclusion: that society will soon be led by a criminal sociopath, because voters are, at this point, too stupid to know the difference in the character of a person like Barack Obama and a conman like Donald Trump.

Membership Pro Tip: Keep It Simple

May 19, 2021

Communicating directly—and personally—with members is a great way to highlight new resources and other benefits without sounding like a sales pitch.

The Health Industry Distributors Association recently announced a 21 percent surge in corporate members, exceeding national benchmarks for trade association member renewal rates. The group achieved the increase in several ways, including responsive communications tailored specifically for members’ top priorities. Kelley Taft, HIDA’s director of membership, and her team found a successful—and super easy—way to inform members about the new resources.

How Does It Work?

Taft’s team created the tools to help members communicate more effectively with their customers, government officials, and other stakeholders. The resources include ...

Unknown hackers have been exploiting four Android vulnerabilities that allow the execution of malicious code that can take complete control of devices, Google warned on Wednesday.

All four of the vulnerabilities were disclosed two weeks ago in Google’s Android Security Bulletin for May. Google has released security updates to device manufacturers, who are then responsible for distributing the patches to users.

Google’s May 3 bulletin initially didn’t report that any of the roughly 50 vulnerabilities it covered were under active exploitation. On Wednesday, Google updated the advisory to say that there are “indications” that ...

Apple releases first iOS 14.7 and iPadOS 14.7 betas to developers

May 19, 2021

iOS 14.7 beta 1

In a surprising turn of events, Apple released the first iOS 14.7 and iPadOS 14.7 developer betas on Wednesday afternoon. The reason that this came as such a shock is because iOS 14.6 has yet to be publicly released, as the release candidate only rolled out on Monday. Only beta program participants have had a chance to experience iOS 14.6, and yet iOS 14.7 is already in testing.

The beta releases are only a few minutes old, so we still don't know what features and fixes they bring to iPhone and iPad, but we'll be sure to share more ...

Susquehanna Financial Group analyst Chris Rolland noted Tuesday that the wait time for all major semiconductor product categories is up considerably—from 16 weeks in March to 17 weeks in April. This represents the longest lead time—the elapsed time between placing an order and receiving products—that the industry has faced since 2017, when the firm began tracking this data.

Solve Your Shelving Problems with Room & Board’s Bookcases

Storage is an almost impossible task, especially when dealing with city apartments that don’t have basements, or perhaps even closets. Moving out of the pandemic, we also might find ourselves with more stuff cluttering our spaces than in early 2020 — results of quarantine consumerism. Shelving is vital, but the question becomes, what kind of shelving do you actually need?

Modular shelving systems, like Vitsoe’s sleek metal arrangements or the millennial brand Floyd’s colorful, expandable units, are appealing because they can fit in any space. But they are expensive and the infinite options can be intimidating. Who wants to ...

Did Earth’s early rise in oxygen help multicellular life evolve?

May 19, 2021

A new study is taking the air out of a hypothesis linking early Earth’s oxygenation to larger, more complex organisms. Georgia Tech researchers report a more complex effect.

Scientists have long thought that there was a direct connection between the rise in atmospheric oxygen, which started with the Great Oxygenation Event 2.5 billion years ago, and the rise of large, complex multicellular organisms.

That theory, the “Oxygen Control Hypothesis,” suggests that the size of these early multicellular organisms was limited by the depth to which oxygen could diffuse into their ...

While most of the other artworks on display at the museum were accompanied by extensively researched wall texts, these sculptures, carved from polychrome marble, had no attribution and were simply labeled “Buste d’Africain.” “I shot a photo of one of them, came back to America, and thought about the image for a long ...

Kaiyo Raises Another $5M for its Used Furniture Marketplace That Also Handles Delivery and More

May 19, 2021

Anyone who has moved apartments in New York knows how difficult it can be to move with furniture. While there are a number of options for pre-owned furniture (Craigslist, Facebook marketplace, et al), Kaiyo is the only one that handles the most tedious part of the process – the logistics of the sale. The startup, founded in 2014, picks up the item, cleans, photographs, and even delivers it ...
