Tell it to SunStar: Favoritism at the oval?

May 14, 2021

By a concerned citizen

The reopening of the Cebu City Sports Center after more than a year since it was closed made a lot of people happy, especially those who miss jogging or walking at the oval.

The current restrictions imposed by management are understandable and necessary to ensure that users comply with minimum health protocols like the wearing of masks and social distancing.

However, I feel that enforcers don’t treat everybody equally. They accost some but leave others alone. It doesn’t help that many of their co-employees are the main violators.

Nalzaro: Religion and science are incompatible

May 14, 2021

Religion, faith and science are indeed incompatible. Religion and science both offer explanations for why life and the universe exist. Science relies on tested empirical evidence and observation. Religion relies on subjective belief in a creator. Religious faith is of two kinds: evidence-sensitive and evidence insensitive. The former views faith as closely coordinated with demonstrable truths. The latter more strictly as an act of the will of the religious believer alone. The former includes evidence garnered from the testimony and works of other believers.

I roamed the city’s mountain barangays for many years and that allowed me to forge lasting friendships with some of the farmers there. Soon, I realized the uniqueness of the lives of Cebu farmers and of the kind of exploitation and neglect they went and still are going through. The Cebu terrain is different from those in, say, Bohol and Negros. The forest cover is thin and the mountainsides have steep inclines because of this. Add to that a population that has taken over almost every hectare of land.

Landlords are the absentee type because they live in the ...

New discovery promises to bring singlet fission enhanced C-Si solar cells nearer to commercial production

The scientists believe that this technique may help conventional crystalline silicon solar cell technologies reach efficiencies close to 30%.

Singlet fission is the quantum mechanics that could allow breaking the theoretical barrier for the efficiency of silicon photovoltaic cells. It consists of a photophysical process in molecules and molecular aggregates, whereby a singlet exciton ...
