Velez: Has star power faded in politics?
May 07, 2021
WE ARE fixated with celebrities. Their performances, fashion, haircuts, even love life, choice of gadgets and food define us. But do they also define our politics? Maybe, but do they still have star power?
For instance, when action star "Bad Boy" Robin Padilla challenged government critics to shut up and join him to defend the West Philippine Sea, do we believe he is a real action star that can go gung-ho firing to fight the Chinese Navy? It took a call out from army colonel Mike Logico to deflate Padilla's braggadocio.

They were hopeful because, well, we live in an archipelago, a beach, for most of us, is just 10 to 20 minutes away.
They were hopeful also because of the goal of their event, for an archipelago, the number of people who know how to swim is low and the incidents of drowning are high.

Generation charges, hotter months cause spike in electricity bills
May 07, 2021
THE Visayan Electric Company has advised consumers to put more conscious effort in managing their power consumption especially during this summer period.
In a statement, Visayan Electric said one of the reasons that could explain customers’ higher electricity bills since March would be the increase in generation charges due to the increase in fuel (coal and bunker) prices and higher prices of electricity at the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market.
“We have to emphasize that the increase is not reflected in Visayan Electric’s distribution rate, but in the generation charges, which goes to the power generators,” Visayan Electric president and ...

New electrolyte boosts lithium-air batteries
May 07, 2021
Scientists in the UK reported a breakthrough in lithium-oxygen batteries, achieved by experimenting with different electrolyte compositions. Working with ionic liquids, they were able to tweak the electrolyte recipe to minimize unwanted reactions during battery cycling, and greatly improve on both performance and stability.
It’s a common story in the world of battery research – new materials and designs that promise much higher performance face challenges and limitations in terms of reaching their potential in a practical device and demonstrating long-term stability.
And this is particularly true for batteries incorporating lithium or other transition metal anode materials, which tend ...

The planet is overcrowded with orbiters, namely Mars Odyssey, Mars Express, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, Mars Orbiter Mission, MAVEN, the Trace Gas Orbiter, the Tianwen-1 orbiter and the Hope Mars Mission.
