I watched the “Sesame Street,” a show intended for preschoolers, long after I thought of myself as a child.

I knew intimately the “people in the neighborhood” of Sesame Street long before I knew the first names of a few people on the street where I actually lived for some 25 years.

When Papang caught me watching another rerun and suggested switching off the TV set to save power, I heard his voice in a tiny echo from a long way down inside the ...

Cabaero: Still mask on for us

May 15, 2021

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced last week that those fully vaccinated no longer need to wear a mask or distance themselves from others.

Well, that’s for the American public. Other developed countries that have vaccinated in full their citizens against the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) may be issuing similar directives five months after they started their inoculation programs last December.

No such directive is expected to come anytime soon from our own Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) that is leading the fight against Covid-19. Our vaccination campaign officially ...

Malilong: Pacquiao for President

May 15, 2021

That was a vicious hook the Bulacan chapter of the PDP-Laban threw last week at Manny Pacquiao, boxing icon, senator of the Republic and the ruling party’s president.

The chapter, one of the many spread all over the country to accommodate the turncoats who took shelter in the administration’s camp in 2016, demanded during a “consultative meeting” on May 7 that Pacquiao explain why he should not be punished for publicly claiming that President Duterte’s handling of the West Philippine Sea issue and the Covid-19 pandemic was lacking when he has gone “thru official party channels.”

Strangely, the chapter ...

Of course not. Why should it?

Here in the Philippines, I truly believe the Duterte administration has been doing its best to address the pandemic. It’s not the same as saying that it has been successful in handling the situation because, let’s face it, it has committed a lot of blunders since the health crisis started more than a year ago. But hey, at least the vaccines are slowly trickling in to be administered to the public.

So everyone should be excited, right? Wrong. Many ...

Pages: 3x3 basketball

May 15, 2021

Two years ago when I stepped inside Glorietta in Makati, the mall shook.

It reverberated not because of the music of the band “IV of Spades.” The screaming voices did not come from the kids watching Cartoon Network’s Shriektober, featuring The Powerpuff Girls. The echoes resonated from the bouncing of the ball. It originated from the squeaking sounds of the shoes, the whistle of the referee and the electronic dance music that awakened mall-goers.

The game was “3x3 basketball” and the dribbling cascaded throughout the five floors of the Ayala-owned mall.

Yes, basketball was played not inside MOA Arena ...
