Espinoza: Community pantry not communist party
April 27, 2021
I THOUGHT that it was a joke when I first heard the news that the Quezon City police and the National Task Force to End the Local Communist Insurgency (NTF-Elcac) red-tagged the community pantry that Ana Patricia Non started in Maginhawa Street, Quezon City. Non had to stop temporarily her community work to avoid the red-tagging. The police probably misread the community pantry sign as "communist party" (lol).
The matter was made worse when NTF-Elcac spokesman Army Lieutenant General Antonio Parlade Jr. called the senators stupid as he lamented the plan of some senators to defund the NTF-Elcac. The ...

Algo: Nature-based solutions must anchor the Philippines's climate action
April 27, 2021
THE importance of planetary health has never been more evident than today. Global and national actions are currently working on addressing the Covid-19 pandemic and the climate crisis, both of which are traced to environmental neglect by human activities.
Consequently, nature-based solutions (NBS) are at the forefront of the upcoming 2021 UN climate conference (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland. With less than a decade to go to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial temperatures, countries are already discussing on how to raise their ambition while pursuing national sustainable development.

Nalzaro: Benefits of getting vaccinated
April 27, 2021
I THINK little by little, more people have been convinced to submit themselves to vaccination. Maybe this is the reason we have a shortage of vaccines because more people have already been fully convinced to be vaccinated.
This is contrast to a survey last February before the launching of the program where vaccine hesitancy among Filipinos was high. Pulse Asia’s survey from February 22 to March 3, 2021, showed that 61 percent said “no” to getting vaccinated.
Only 26 percent of the respondents wanted to be vaccinated, while 23 percent were undecided. This was before the vaccination for the ...

April 27, 2021
THE Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday, April 27, 2021, reported 7,204 new coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases, the lowest in 20 days and the ninth consecutive below-10,000 daily count.
In its case bulletin Tuesday, the DOH said the relatively low number of cases is due to the failure of 22 testing laboratories to submit their data to the Covid-19 Documents Repository System (CDRS).
The new infections increased the cumulative case count to 1,013,618.

No match for Nepomuceno, Colita's bullet shells
April 27, 2021
THE ballistic test results on the firearm that Police Staff Sgt. Celso Colita used in taking his own life did not match the bullet shells recovered from the scene where Ritchie Nepomuceno was killed.
Cebu City Police Office Director Josefino Ligan confirmed the ballistic exam results.
He said this means the gun used to kill Nepomuceno is different from the gun Colita used on himself.
“This is scientific evidence to corroborate if Colita is a person of interest. This slightly eliminates him as a person of interest,” said Ligan in Cebuano.

Solid-state solar cells based on metal-organic framework nanomaterials
April 27, 2021
Spanish scientists have fabricated solid-state PV cells with two different porous nanomaterials. Although low in terms of efficiency, one of the cells built with the MIL-125(Ti) metal-organic framework nanomaterial exhibited better photovoltaic performance than similar devices.
Scientists from Universitat Politecnica de Valencia in Spain have developed solid-state solar cells with special kinds of metal-organic framework (MOF) nanomaterials.
MOFs are new, promising porous materials in the areas of gas absorption and separation, catalysis, drug delivery, and molecule sensing. Nanoparticles made of such materials are used as components in chemical sensors, biological probes, and membrane separation materials, and serve as building ...

NEW DELHI — India recorded more than 320,000 new cases of coronavirus infection Tuesday as a grim surge of illness and death weighed on the country and its sinking health system started getting much-needed support from foreign nations.
Tuesday’s 323,144 new infections raised India’s total past 17.6 million, behind only the United States. It ended a five-day streak of recording the largest single-day increases in any country throughout the pandemic, but the decline likely reflects lower weekend testing rather than reduced spread of the virus.
