NASA says there are probably organic salts on Mars

May 20, 2021

life on mars

NASA has been studying Mars for a long time now. Scientists working with the various rovers that have been sent to the Martian surface have uncovered plenty of interesting things, but evidence supporting the theory that there was once life on the Red Planet is still elusive. Finding organic molecules could go a long way toward changing that, so news that a team of NASA researchers now believes that organic salts are almost certainly present on Mars is pretty exciting... but there's a catch.

In a new blog post, NASA explains that a group of scientists publishing their work ...

What mimes interacting with invisible objects says about visual perception

May 20, 2021

When we watch a mime seemingly pull rope, climb steps, or try to escape that infernal box, we don't struggle to recognize the implied objects. Rather, our minds automatically "see" them, a new study concludes.

The art of mime has been around in some form for millennia, although when it comes to contemporary depictions in popular culture, mimes seem to be almost universally hated. But they still have something to teach us. Scientists at Johns Hopkins University have brought mime into the laboratory for a series of experiments exploring how the human brain fills in perceptual gaps. When ...

Five Remote Work Rituals for Spring

May 20, 2021

As many association professionals continue to work from home, they’re looking for new ways to battle burnout, Zoom fatigue, and isolation. This spring, take advantage of the warmer weather and longer days to recharge.

Spring is here, COVID-19 vaccines are readily available, and the cold days of winter are behind us—it’s much easier not to feel cooped up at home these days. However, remote work is still the norm for many professionals, which means they shouldn’t abandon the remote rituals that kept them healthy and productive during the winter. After all, a disruption to your routine, especially in ...

Wellness Options Flourish During Virtual Events

May 20, 2021

Since the start of the pandemic, associations have transitioned their fitness and wellness offerings at conferences to virtual ones. Here’s a look at how they’re keeping self-care and workouts top of mind during their online events.

For the past several years, fun runs, yoga classes, and meditation sessions were often incorporated into in-person conferences.

And they haven’t gone anywhere during the pandemic. In fact, wellness activities are still a staple of virtual and hybrid events. Here’s a look at how association conferences have maintained these opportunities during their online conferences since March 2020.

First up is the American Association ...

There Was Something Distinctive About the U.S. Capitol Tourists, But It’s Hard To Nail Down

May 20, 2021

My experience with tourism is limited to visits to 21 other countries, mostly on business, lots of family vacations through the years, and meeting the considerable flood of tourists who come here (Santa Barbara County), largely to taste wine.

Yet I’d bet that even those that are 10 times more traveled than I am, or those who live in destination meccas like Paris or Venice, have never seen tourists who build gallows and tie nooses to them.  It’s peculiar behavior, as I think anyone would have to admit.

NASA has been planning on sending humans back to the Moon for a long time now. A new study published in Solar Physicsexplains that the Sun might not want to cooperate with a Moon return ...

Social Scales: Aaron Gilbert and Martin Wong at P·P·O·W

May 20, 2021

On my way to P·P·O·W’s new storefront gallery in Chinatown, coming out of the Canal Street J/Z subway, I walked past an imposing gray building that I later learned was the Manhattan Detention Complex. Known as “The Tombs,” it housed several hundred inmates before closing in November 2020. Turning off Walker Street, I passed a crowd waiting in front of the New York City Rescue Mission on Lafayette, and a woman asked if I could buy her lunch. I turned the corner on Broadway and walked into the gallery.

“1981–2021” was a robust two-person show featuring the paintings of ...

Burnout Is Real. Here Are Five Strategies to Manage It

I recently checked in with a few colleagues to ask, “How are you doing… really?” While I had hoped they’d found a new, better groove amidst pandemic living, I was surprised by how many were either exactly where they were a year ago, mentally and emotionally speaking, and some even worse.

One accentuated this latter point by sharing:“I’m still exhausted. It’s going on 14 months. I’m worried about… everything. And I still don’t feel secure with my job.”

My friend is a high-performing leader who’s survived multiple rounds of layoffs in the oil and gas industry. Her husband ...

Why Telecom is a Zero Sum Game

May 20, 2021

The core mobile business requires buying spectrum and installing cell phone towers and base stations. These are not businesses for the faint of heart, given the massive capital costs.

The payoff for this investment, though, is a competitive moat. The actual utilization of its infrastructure is effectively free on a marginal basis. Laying infrastructure is expensive, but using it is cheap.

That said, to the extent competition exists, it is quite brutal because it is zero sum; an AT&T customer is not Verizon customer is not a T-Mobile customer. The combination of scarcity in customers and zero marginal cost ...

Is the PC Culture Really “Corrosive?”

May 20, 2021

I’ve heard lots of people say that political correctness is equivalent to shutting down free speech, but I’ve never understood it.

Take the most offensive and least PC thing you can think of.  Maybe it’s the Proud Boys saying that the U.S. is a nation of, by, and for white people and that people of other races are not welcome here.  Can they openly make comments like this?

Of course!

It won’t happen on a college campus, because colleges have the duty (on top of the right) to ensure that students whose parents are writing big tuition checks aren’t ...

Banksy Dealt Blow in Trademark Case Involving Monkey Image

May 20, 2021

The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) has ruled against Banksy in a trademark case surrounding the famed street artist’s iconic monkey image. According to a report by the Art Newspaper, the artist’s EU trademark of the work, which was first filed by the entity Pest Control in 2018, has been “declared invalid in its entirety” by the EUIPO.

The case stemmed from a 2019 complaint issued by the greeting card company Full Colour Black, which contended that Banksy’s trademark was “filed in bad faith and that it was non-distinctive,” according to the Art Newspaper.

Bansky’s image, ...

Controversial Cecil Rhodes Statue to Remain at Oxford College

May 20, 2021

A statue of Cecil Rhodes installed on the campus of the University of Oxford in England will remain on view—for now, at least—as debates about it continue on.

Owned by the university’s Oriel College, the statue portrays the 19th-century South African politician who put forward imperialist views and claimed that the English people were a “master race.” Activists and historians have said that Rhodes was a white supremacist.

A protest movement, known as Rhodes Must Fall, arose in South Africa in 2015 in response to another statue of Rhodes at the University of Cape Town; it ultimately caused ...

Fire-damaged and unusable Leica M4 and Summicron lens sells for around $2,000

May 20, 2021

You'd think an inoperable camera and lens damaged in a fire would be worthless. That's probably true most of the time, but not the case when the gear in question is a Leica M4 with a Summicron 50mm lens. The 1968 camera and lens, described by Flints Auctions in the United Kingdom as 'chargrilled,' sold for £1,488 including UK VAT, which is just over $2,100 at current conversion rates. The actual hammer price was £1,200 ($1,700).

While a clean Leica M4 rangefinder camera is a beautiful camera with a timeless style, the fire-damaged one auctioned off looks rough. Really ...

McDonaldization and the Trump Phenomenon

May 20, 2021

McDonaldization

MEANING:
noun:
1. Standardization that focuses on efficiency, predictability, control, etc., at the expense of individuality or creativity.
2. The spread of the influence of American culture.
I was somewhat surprised that the definition here wasn’t more pejorative.  I think of McDonald’s as a purveyor of poison, addicting people, especially children, to sugar, fat and salt, by heavily advertising an alluring alternative to real nutrition.
It’s nauseating to walk through the streets of Paris and encounter a McDonald’s.  Small wonder these people resent us the way they ...
