Kitchens. They’re amazing spaces. They can be visually stunning. They must be total workhorses. They’re quite often the heart of the home. But they can also accumulate a lot of CRAP.
As I work to not only design but also fully outfit the kitchen for the Hood Canal Cottage, I’m starting completely from scratch. No hand-me-down casserole dishes, no knives I’ve carted around since college, no random herb scissors that I’ve never ever used. For once, I get to hand-select every tool and every object that comes into the space.

Lyft has sold its self-driving division to a Toyota subsidiary called Woven Planet for $550 million—the latest sign that it takes deep pockets to compete in the self-driving arena. Lyft's main competitor, Uber, sold its own self-driving unit to the well-financed startup Aurora back in December.
Lyft announced its self-driving project back in 2017, a time of extreme optimism about self-driving technology. A few months earlier, in late 2016, Lyft President John Zimmer predicted that a majority of Lyft rides would be handled by self-driving vehicles by 2021.
Apple finally rolled out iOS 14.5 to the public on Monday, marking the official introduction of the all-new App Tracking Transparency feature which requires apps to ask for users' consent in order to track them. This will undoubtedly have an effect on the bottom line of many apps, which might incentivize some developers to gently nudge app users in the direction of allowing themselves to be tracked by offering them some kind of reward.
Apple, on the other hand, doesn't want developers to offer incentives for allowing tracking. In an update to its Human Interface Guidelines, the company ...

Anyone working with art knows the value of good lighting. Whether you are a collector, a gallerist, or an artist, choosing and placing the correct lighting is important for two reasons: The wrong lighting can damage artwork, and if the work is insufficiently or unevenly illuminated, it can’t be fully appreciated. In general, artwork should be lit by LED lights as they give off little heat and emit neither ultraviolet nor infrared rays. Beyond that, the right choice will depend on the space and the work in question. Also note that with track lighting fixtures, not every fixture will ...

When a chunk of space rock makes it to the surface of Earth there's always a question as to where it originated. Scientists have gotten quite good at being able to trace the source of various pieces of space debris based on the makeup of the rock as well as the position of Earth and the direction the rock was traveling through space when it met up with our planet. In 2018, an asteroid that was being tracked through space resulted in debris that impacted Earth in Botswana in Southern Africa. After the rock was found, researchers began the ...

These days, Yoshitomo Nara’s rise is generally considered to be a market-driven phenomenon. In 2019, he captured the market’s attention when Sotheby’s sold his work Knife Behind Back (2000) for a record-setting $25 million in Hong Kong. Since then, he has become one of the most expensive artists in Asia, and his work regularly appears in marquee auctions there.

Netflix just shared its list of new releases for May, but as has been the case for most of 2021, it was underwhelming. There are some interesting additions on the list, including The Mitchells vs. The Machines from producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, but the content pipeline has unquestionably dried up for Netflix in recent months. In an attempt to keep users from reconsidering their subscription status, Netflix released a preview of its summer movie lineup on Tuesday, and it certainly looks like things are going to pick up in the coming months.

A report in Japanese publication Nikkei claims that the next generation of Apple's custom-designed silicon chips for Mac, dubbed the "M2," entered production this month.
Citing "sources familiar with the matter," Nikkei reports that the chips will power Macs that will be introduced in the second half of 2021, potentially as soon as July. That July date suggests that new Macs could be announced at Apple's 2021 developer conference, which kicks off on June 7.

Just like the M1, the M2 will be a system-on-a-chip. That means it has a central processing unit, graphics processing unit, and ...

“DO NOT LET YOUR THOUGHTS WANDER,” says a woman’s familiar voice. She is speaking into a microphone in an isolation booth, her mouth pressed so close to the sensitive diaphragm that we seem to feel more than hear the mutual caress of her lips as they savor each distinct syllable of an English translation of a fourteenth-century theological text on the Buddhist afterlife. This voice wants to guide us past fearful passions and worldly attachments and into an ecstatic beyond. In defiance of a simultaneously cramped and hyperstimulating mediascape, we are enjoined to “enter undistracted into clear awareness.”

In this excerpt from a three-hour interview at a New Orleans jail on March 15, 2015, L.A. County Deputy D.A. John Lewin slowly, but surely, pushes the accused killer to talk about what happened to friend Susan Berman.

One of the brightest stars in the Milky Way, AG Carinae is one of only about 50 luminous blue variables in the local group of nearby galaxies. Like its brethren, it will live fast and die young, burning through its nuclear fuel at a prodigious rate to generate the outward pressure needed to offset the inward crush of gravity. It impresses shareholders. But more importantly, it shows how well their businesses are doing.
And when a large chunk of companies is doing better than expected, it’s exactly what we want to see.
So far, about a quarter of S&P 500 companies have reported first-quarter 2021 results.
Of those, 84% have beat analyst expectations. That’s about as good as it gets.
In fact, according to FactSet, the five-year average for this same point in earnings season is only 74%. We’re well above that, and it’s exciting news.

Almost a decade after Sigma inaugurated its 'Global Vision' line of lenses with the original 35mm F1.4 'Art', the company has released an all-new 35mm, built from the ground up for modern mirrorless ILCs. The Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG DN 'Art' is a new design, offering several refinements over its predecessor, and is available now in two versions: Sony E-mount and Panasonic/Leica/Sigma's L-mount.
We've been shooting with an L-mount version for a few days, and you'll find a full gallery of samples here. In the meantime, click through this article ...
Sigma's fast new 35mm F1.4 DG DN for Sony and L-mount bodies has arrived, and Chris and Jordan have plenty to say about it. Check out their review in this episode of DPReview TV.
Sigma's new 35mm F1.4 DG DN Art lens is a big leap forward from the company's original 2012-era Art-series prime, and features an entirely new optical construction and refined handling, specifically designed for stills and video shooting on full-frame mirrorless cameras. Available for both Sony E-mount and Panasonic/Leica/Sigma L-mount bodies, we tested it with both the high-resolution Panasonic Lumix DC-S1R and the 24MP Lumix DC-S5.
Sigma has introduced its 35mm F1.4 DG DN Art for Sony E and Panasonic/Leica/Sigma L-mount bodies. This newly designed lens has 15 elements in 11 groups, including 'FLD', 'ELD', 'SLD' glass (all variants of low-dispersion glass aimed at minimizing chromatic aberrations), as well as aspherical elements. The lens' single focus element is driven by a quiet stepping motor.
The minimum focus distance is 30cm (11.8") and the maximum magnification is 0.19x. Sigma says that the lens' 11 aperture blades will produce 'smooth, round bokeh'.
Given that it's in Sigma's 'Art' lineup, it's no surprise that the 35mm F1.4 is ...

Together, the defenses provide a comprehensive set of protections designed to prevent users from inadvertently installing malware on their Macs. While one-click and even zero-clickexploits rightfully get lots of attention, it’s far more common to see trojanized apps that disguise malware ...

Most of us are familiar by now with Mercury retrograde periods, which (because Mercury is the messenger planet and deals with all kinds of communication and communication devices) tend to bring about communication glitches and endless renegotiations of contracts. Even people who don’t “believe in” astrology know that when Mercury is retrograde, things are just different.
This doesn’t mean, though, that retrograde periods are “bad.” ...
