A Great Hang: 9 Hammocks Made for Sleeping Under the Stars

May 24, 2021

If you’ve ever taken a relaxing summer siesta in a hammock, you already understand the appeal of camping in one. Hammocks offer real advantages for a solo adventurer willing to swap a tent for a comfortable sling in the trees: Fewer bugs crawl into bed, and there’s no soggy ground and no poky roots. Plus, these portable shelters—that pair with rain flies and bug nets, if they’re not already attached—pack smaller than most tents and set up just about anywhere there are trees.

Ben&Ben come to terms with loss and grief on ‘Magpahinga’ music video

May 24, 2021

Ben&Ben took the month of May by storm, teasing fans with the grandest way possible to announce a new era in music. First, there was “Upuan,” a cinematic piece of pop music that swirls intimately against a backdrop of nature retreat.

And then there’s “Magpahinga,” a lovingly sparse ballad that embraces the importance of healing on one’s own terms. Instead of recapturing old glories, both songs are bold enough to leave us ending in places both infinite and enduring, widening our sense of appreciation for the band on a purely intimate level.

Today, the nine-piece collective have set the ...

Facilitating speech comprehension in rare inherited hearing loss patients

May 24, 2021

Hearing loss is a disability that affects approximately 5% of the world's population. Clinically determining the exact site of the lesion is critical for choosing a proper treatment for hearing loss. For example, subjects with damage in sound conduction or mild outer hair cell damage would benefit from hearing aids, while those with significant damage to outer or inner hair cells would benefit from cochlear implants. On the other hand, the subjects with impairments in more central structures such as the cochlear nerve, brainstem, or brain do not benefit from either hearing aids or cochlear implants. However, the role ...

Researcher solves longstanding fallopian tube transport debate

May 24, 2021

Wei Yan, MD, Ph.D., and his research group have solved a longstanding mystery and scientific debate about the mechanism underlying the gamete and embryo transport within the fallopian tube. Using a mouse model that lacked motile cilia in the oviduct, Dr. Yan's group demonstrated that motile cilia in the very distal end of the fallopian tube, called infundibulum, are essential for oocyte pickup. Disruptions of the ciliary structure and/or beating patterns lead to failure in oocyte pickup, and consequently, a loss of female fertility. Interestingly, motile cilia in other parts of the oviduct can facilitate sperm and embryo transport ...

How HCV manages to evade the immune system to infect the host chronically is not entirely understood. In a new study, researchers from Osaka University discovered a novel molecular mechanism by which HCV interferes with the host's immune system to cause chronic liver infection. These findings may help establish a novel therapy against chronic HCV infection.

The Six Stages of the Creation of the State

May 24, 2021

[Excerpted from chapter 1 of The State: Its History and Development Viewed Sociologically]

In the genesis of the state, from the subjection of a peasant folk by a tribe of herdsmen or by sea nomads, six stages may be distinguished.

In the following discussion it should not be assumed that the actual historical development must, in each particular case, climb the entire scale step by step. Although, even here, the argument does not depend upon bare theoretical construction, since every particular stage is found in numerous examples, both in the world's history and in ethnology, and there are ...

The Six Stages of the Creation of the State

May 24, 2021

[Excerpted from chapter 1 of The State: Its History and Development Viewed Sociologically]

Although, even here, the argument does not depend upon bare theoretical construction, since every particular stage is found in numerous examples, both in the world's history and in ethnology, and there are ...

U.S. oil futures end at highest in a week as some doubts over an Iran nuclear deal surface

May 24, 2021

Oil futures moved sharply higher on Monday, with U.S. prices posting their highest settlement in a week, buoyed by some doubts that an Iran nuclear deal will be reached anytime soon. A lack of cooperation by Iran, as well as "skeptical comments about Iranian compliance" by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, both "lower the odds that a new agreement is reached and therefore, suggest sanctions are not likely to be lifted in the near to medium term," said Tyler Richey, co-editor at Sevens Report Research. If a deal is reached and U.S. lifts sanctions on Iran, that would ...

13 Bassists Who Could Replace David Ellefson in Megadeth

May 24, 2021

The biggest story in the metal world today, by far, is the firing of David Ellefson from Megadeth amidst an ongoing sex scandal. With a new album nearly complete and a tour with Lamb of God, Trivium, and In Flames kicking off in August, the band is gonna need to find a replacement ASAP.

And hey, look, it won’t be hard for Megadeth to find a new bassist; pretty much any bass player who isn’t Robert Trujillo would be only-too-happy to have a cushy paying gig with a Big Four band.

Still, we thought we’d make some suggestions, because, ...

Curiously, despite the band’s prominent plugs of Hornsby’s membership, he doesn’t get a whole lot of face time in the video, disappointing because his facial expressions are always an entertaining part of the Sevendust ...
